3 Easy Things to Teach your NEW PUPPY!
5 Tips for Teaching Your Pet Its Name
Here are five ways to make the learning process a little easier:
1. Say the name with a positive tone
Your pet needs to associate her name with a positive experience, so you will need to say her name loudly and clearly with a very positive tone. Practice saying the name in an uplifting, loving way, so that your dog recognizes it as a positive statement. A high-pitched tone is the best way to point out that the word you are saying is very important.
2. Don't use other words or phrases with the name
Your pet needs to recognize her name easily, so don't talk in complete sentences using the name until she has adjusted to it. You want to say the new pet name as if your dog or cat already knows her name. Use it to get her attention, and as a single-word command so your pet can hear it properly. Remember: Repetition is key!
3. Set up a reward system
Give your pet a reward each time she looks at you after you call her name so that she understands that this word has significance. Every time you say the name and your pet looks up at you or responds in any way, reward her with a treat or a pat. It won't take long for her to realize that she needs to respond to the word.
4. Slowly increase distractions
When your pet starts to respond to the name on a regular basis, start using the name within a sentence, or in an unfamiliar place with lots of distractions. You want to make it harder for your pet to recognize her name with more distractions so that she can respond in a real world setting in future. Continue to praise and reward her every time she responds to her name when it's used in a sentence, or in a place with a lot of distractions.
5. Don't use her name in a negative situation
Avoid reprimanding your pet with her new name when she's still learning to respond to it. If you need to reprimand her, simply say "no" in a direct way. Don't link her name with the bad behavior, or she may not respond to her new name in the future.
Training your dog or cat to listen and respond to her pet name can take time, but you can speed up the process by engaging your pet in some specific activities. Practice the tips above so your pet will learn her new name easily and respond every time she hears it.
