An Olympic Mom Shares Her Stay-Healthy Tips

I've had a slight obsession with Dara Torres (Olympic athlete, swimmer and mom) ever since I read her book, Age Is Just a Number, and watched her win three silver medals at the 2008 Olympics (she was 40 at the time). She is living proof that your body is capable of amazing things, no matter what your age.

So when I heard that she would be hosting a day-long virtual party over at Nickelodeon's ParentsConnect this Thursday (November 4th) and was available to chat prior, I jumped at the opportunity to ask her a few health-minded questions for the Daily Dose. Here's what she had to say…

WD: What is your best tip (or two) for staying healthy while being a mom with a busy schedule?

DT: I always tell working moms and stay at home moms the same thing: working out is my job so they can't hold themselves to the same workout regime standard that I have but they canabsolutelyfind extra time to themselves for their health and fitness. In my book, Gold Medal Fitness I give many tips and tricks on stealing some time at your house to workout.

WD: How has being an athlete changed the way you look at motherhood/parenting? And vice versa, how has motherhood changed the way you view being a professional athlete?

DT: Both are the same answer which is Time Management, Set Priorities and make sure that you don't forget that you are important too. My daughter Tessa is everything to me, but if I wasn't happy because I didn't get a chance to workout, I would not be the mother I strive to be. The principals I use in my life and being a mom are also how I work on being the best athlete I can!

WD: What do you hope to instill in your child when it comes to exercise and healthy eating?

DT: Tessa like most children is active and loves to participate in things that I can do with her.
