Dsquared2 SS14 – Milan Fashion Week
Dsquared2 SS14 Review
They say there are always two sides to every story. So does Italian menswear really equal perfect tailoring, impeccable proportions and tasteful details? Well, not exclusively. Of course, it is true that Milan is home to some of the most dapper and charming men we have ever met. But believe us when we say that the city has seen more dreadful fashion crime scenes than you would suspect.
Think low-rise (and a little too revealing) jeans, shiny puffa jackets (apparently an ideal match to the trousers), all teamed up with wedged sneakers (yes, in Italy there is a male version of this trend) and – last but most certainly not least – bum bags and backpacks. It might sound horrendous and, indeed, it often looks just as it sounds. Luckily, it is rare to see all the above elements combined together. More frequently, they are rather effortlessly incorporated into a more classic outfit.
After such an introduction, you might presume that we somewhat disliked the Dsquared2 SS14 fashion show. However, this is not entirely true. On Milan Fashion Week’s final day, the brand transformed the runway into a man-made tropical paradise filled with lush forestry and a real waterfall. “James Dean crashes his plane on a desert island” – this impossible scenario turned out to be the inspiration behind the aesthetic.
Famous for their eclectic, sport-luxe style, Dean and Dan Caten once again delivered what their fans will surely love. Classic jackets, leather outerwear, plenty of denim and military-inspired pieces – all mixed and matched in a variety of playful outfits. Bright candy colours and silk pyjama-like separates were a refreshing, amusing and very on-trend addition to the typical D2 look.
Altogether, the collection received some skeptical reviews from the critics and industry experts. Yet we are sure that we will be seeing it on the Milanese streets more than most are ready to admit.
