Over the course of the last few months, those of us who intermingle our lives here and on Facebook have been through many amazing, confusing, devastating, painful and humorous events. In our somewhat extended group from all over the world we have experienced, fire, flood, appliance failure, surgeries, moves, black outs both personal and electrical, and heartache. All that’s missing is death, disease and pestilence…oh yes, guess we’ve had those, also. We watch and observe as our parents go through the not so golden years, worry about our children and grandchildren and face our own daily struggles with health issues.

TheChristmas season is the time each year when our frazzled minds, recall happier times or perhaps, harder times. We always have a flood of memories sparked by the music, the odors, the foods and the films of yesterday. It’s an inconvenient time to have frustrations and extra work to do, but my life has been particularly chaotic this year. It’s often difficult to roll with the punches when you’d rather just roll over and go back to sleep. There are days I have to pause and take inventory of what my life means, where it is going and how it’s dragging me along. Today, I’d like to share a published poem of mine from several years ago which I think says it for me as we examine the reflective side of life which is in actuality, life itself.

THE JOURNEY

We become fatigued by life
Slowly, one day at a time.
Successes
Failures
Love found and
Love lost.

This shell and vehicle
Our body
Once a friend
Now becomes less cordial.

You feel the same
Within,
Yet, the mirror and your stamina tell a different tale.

You grow weary of decisions
Experiences, doctors, pain and
Disappointments.

Life’s joys
Grow more profound
And you become more of what you are.

Tones become deeper
Resonance becomes fuller and
Colors become richer.

You gradually become a sum of all

Each experience
Each relationship
Each sunrise and sunset,
All equal the who of you.

Your journey nears its end
Each path taken
Has led to your destination
Yet each arrival makes you long
For another.

Was the journey really the goal?

You begin to wonder
What did I accomplish?
What did I achieve?
Was my stack the highest?
Does it matter?

Regrets become reflections
The past is only a moment in time.

You realize learning is the food of life,
Loving is the sunshine.
God is in the details because
God is love.

Each day you move forward
One step closer
Toward the sunshine
Always toward the sunshine.

Enjoy the sunshine my friends.
