GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP is a top priority for most of us and now experts say that people who sleep for seven hours a night can cut the risk of health problems.
Long-term studies have shown that those who achieve less hours sleep double the risk of heart problems, according to researchers.
People who only manage five hours or less sleep a night face a 70% extra risk of dying of all causes and are also twice as likely to die from a cardiovascular problem.
The study looked at the sleeping patterns of 10,308 subjects and showed the average night’s sleep is around seven hours, however a third of adults frequently sleep five hours or less a night.
Professor Francesco Cappuccio of the University of Warwick medical school said: ‘Fewer hours of sleep has become widespread in industrialised societies creating more time for leisure and shiftwork.’
He explained: ‘Our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health.’ Professor Cappuccio warned that insufficient sleep could lead to weight gain, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
